The Cohn de Laval Award is WAA’s most prestigious
award, designed to recognize individuals who have made major contributions
to the discipline of apheresis. Usually one award is given every two
years. The award, a bronze-cast engrave medal, is presented at the
WAA Congress by the WAA President. The awardee is invited to present
a special lecture at the Congress.
- Eligibility
Individuals who have made significant scientific contributions to the discipline
of apheresis or who have given outstanding service to WAA or the discipline.
The candidates may be practicing or retired but must be available to accept
the award at the biennial Congress.
- Nominations
Candidates may be nominated by any WAA member Society or by an active individual
member and two seconders from a WAA member Society. Nominations must involve
a fully completed nomination form, updated curriculum vitae, and a nominating
letter from the president of the nominating society or from the individual
nominator and the two seconders. Nominations should be completed at least
one year prior to the expected presentation.
- Selection
All nominations are submitted to each member Society for selection at least
six months prior to the date of the Congress. The awards committee chairman
tabulates the results from the member Societies and notifies the WAA president
of the successful candidate. The selection process must involve a majority
of at least 2/3 of the selection committee members.

The Abel-Rowntree-Turner award is designed to recognize
investigators under the age of 35 who are contributing quality scientific
research to the field of apheresis. The awardee will present the research
at the Congress. The award is presented at the Congress and consists
of a plaque, free registration to the Congress, and US$500.
- Eligibility
Individuals under the age of 35 are selected from the abstract submissions
to the Congress. Candidates must be the originator of the intellectual
property and responsible for the majority of the practical work. They must
be the first author on the paper and must present it at the Congress.
- Applications
Candidates may register their abstract by checking the box on the abstract
form to indicate they are eligible for the Young Investigator’s Award.
The abstract form will include the criteria information and no entries
will be considered for the award after the abstract deadline.
- Selection
Candidates’ abstracts will be judged by the International Organizing
Committee of the Congress. All abstracts are blinded for anonymous review
and are graded by a point system before the meeting. In the event of ties,
the WAA Board of Directors will make the final determination.
